Situation

This proposal needed to be a sensitive extension to a Victorian semi-detached dwelling that would not only increase living area, introduce a ground floor bedroom but also create an architectural harmony with the existing dwelling.

Feature Bi-fold Opening
A deep dive was conducted to understand how best to extend the dwelling ensuring that the design not only preserved the architectural character but also enhanced it by giving it a fresh perspective. This was achieved by utilising a similar material palette with pennant and ashlar stone, whilst introducing modern apertures along with metal profiles that would frames openings and conceal guttering.

There were a range of upgrades that were possible with the introduction of the single storey rear extension, however there was added complexity with the rear double bay window that is a very unique feature and following detailed discussions with the structural engineer at a pre-planning stage, we were able to clearly identify that it could be preserved at a cost.

The stepped rear extension also provides privacy to the ground floor bedroom whilst creating a semi-enclosed outdoor space that spills out from the extended dining area, creating a strong physical and mental connection with the outdoors.
