Situation

The site is a very well-known Mosque in Bristol. A number of years ago, this site was extended to improve its facilities and has resulted in increased numbers. The focus now is to extend the ladies facilities and bring the space up to modern standards, providing a range of ancillary spaces at the same time. The most recent extension is now focusing on maximising space for ladies, their ablution facilities and a new mortuary space for the community.

More Space for the Ladies
It was clear that the Mosque could be redesigned to provide a space that is fit for the 21st Century by providing a safe, secure and welcoming environment to the ladies to use this essential community resource. It was also clear that a range of key ancillary spaces could be vastly enhanced to provide modern ablution facilities, baby change, disabled toilets and a brand new mortuary for dearly departed loved ones.

A detailed analysis of the site and its rear made it clear that a lot of area was being lost to circulation. The proposal will not only unlock this space and improve the use of building but will also improve accessibility to the Mosque and allow modern facilities to be introduced. The surroundings and the previous extension allowed us to create a proposal that not only was sensitive to its context but also brave with its architectural form and tie the entire build together.
